I took my R-series laptop apart and found a huge ball of lint that was causing the "fan error." The computer wouldn't even boot before, but now it is running fine! The tape is clear and very thin and has a very strong adhesive on the side facing the heatsink. Take a look in these two pictures. Could be bad memory. Sounds like a problem with the motherboard. It looks like I'm stuck unless someone can figure out how to prevent AC from sending too much power to the CPU. news Great forum here!!!

Has anyone seen this? I just turned it one for about ten minutes ocne, but then it shut off and began to say "FAN ERROR", again. If you still getting the same "Fan Error" after replacing the fan, there could be a problem with the system board. Apparently they assume you are going to use a factory replacement heat sink which comes with thermal grease pre-applied.
