I even tried to disassemble the camera, which was quite easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4PGAbyJz...), but the lens and CCD is one compact unit. i don't know if someone dropped it when i wasn't home, whatever it is, it doesnt work. As I was about to throw my FinePix A205 in the garbage for a "lens error", my wife suggested I google for a quick fix. More about the author Hey, why don't you buy a Nikon point and shoot, lol.
Was this answer helpful? Knowing how much the fix is, I decided to try to fix it myself. so annoying. I was taking picture of pictures i had to draw for a class.
This web site's mission is to provide a source of information and help for the Canon lens error. My husband tired and gave up much sooner claiming we was not at all mechanically inclined. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting. The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the A big thank you for the instructions!
My camera was filled with sand...somehow, and the lens had got stuck and wouldn't retract. Another cause is that sand, dust, and dirt will accumulate in the bottom of the case if it is not cleaned regularly (and lint for pockets). I tried it a couple more times; still no change. I'm re-charging the battery (it had sitting a while) and who knows?
Looks like Cannon has programmed it to happen after 3000 pictures. I sent it to a local Canon representative for warranty service, and received it back a couple of weeks later, fixed. I say that they should be made stronger and to be able to take a few drops in their life. This should hopefully work.
